Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine

Four strong reasons to choose CHSTM and the University of Manchester for postgraduate studies in the history of science, technology and medicine or science communication:

Progression. CHSTM has an excellent track record in developing students’ research and professional careers in the longer term.  Around a third of our MSc graduates go on to PhD study in a relevant field. Several PhD students in recent years have been able to proceed directly to postdoctoral study in CHSTM, joining the largest research associate community of any comparable institution in the UK.  CHSTM staff have wide experience in the funding application process, and we're committed to providing strong and enthusiastic students with every possible opportunity for future success.

Flexibility. Our diverse selection of MSc award routes and option courses allow taught students to specialise according to their interests, or receive the broadest possible grounding in the integrated field. Small-group seminar teaching allows a close focus on particular areas of interest or concern. Our broad pool of staff research experience provides an excellent array of supervision opportunities for both Masters dissertation work and doctoral study.

Facilities. We believe that CHSTM offers the best study facilities of any comparable institution. We aim to provide each full-time PhD student with a dedicated desk, networked computer and storage facilities; MSc students have shared local computing facilities and may use the CHSTM library as a research base.  All students have access to the CHSTM reference collections, while the vast resources of the John Rylands University Library are a few minutes’ walk away. The city and region are rich in museums and archive sources. Read more about the CHSTM research environment here.

A world city.  Manchester is an exciting place to live. The area’s international status as a powerhouse for music, sport and entertainment is reflected in the huge range of local attractions, rivalling those of any European city; Manchester’s unique role as the cradle of modern industry is strikingly documented in the fabric of the city itself. Property rentals are low in comparison with London, and Manchester has excellent transport links by road, rail and air.
