Funding
The principal sources of funding for postgraduate research in the history of science, technology and medicine for UK students are:
AHRC and ESRC studentships are open to both full-time and part-time applicants. Applicants should note that all the above sources of funding are awarded on a highly competitive basis.
AHRC and ESRC Funding
AHRC and ESRC studentship competition information and application forms are available from their respective websites:
The ESRC may provide PhD funding as part of a '1+3' incorporating an initial year's MSc study. This route is suitable for our MSc in Research Methods in HSTM progressing directly to a PhD at CHSTM.
The ESRC also provides '+3' funding to candidates who are already qualified at Masters level. The research training requirements are strict: usually the candidate must have attended a Masters programme which has been specifically approved by the ESRC, such as our MSc in Research Methods in HSTM.
Information about other ESRC-recognised programmes offering research training can also be found at the ESRC website.
The deadline for receipt of applications by the funding councils is usually around 1 May. We expect to work closely with applicants in completing the forms, so you should contact us well in advance. The completed application, references, etc, need to reach us by mid-April at the latest to allow time for processing of the forms within the University.
Wellcome Trust funding
Information about Wellcome Trust studentships may be found on the Trust's website:
Potential applicants should discuss their plans in detail with a member of CHSTM staff, before obtaining an application form from the Wellcome Trust. The deadline for receipt of applications by the Trust is usually around 1 May. We expect to work closely with applicants in completing the forms, so you should contact us well in advance. The completed application, references, etc, need to reach us by mid-April at the latest to allow time for processing of the forms within the University.
Centre and University funding
CHSTM and University PhD studentships are sometimes available: for CHSTM awards, announcements will appear in the news section of this site. Applicants should contact the named member of CHSTM staff in the first instance, then submit a University application form (available on request from CHSTM, or online here) stating which studentship you are interested in.
For further information, or if you have any questions about eligibility or procedure for any of these award routes, please contact us.
