Health, History and Policy Seminar Series

Inaugural Seminar: Perspectives on Cancer

Thursday 31 January 2013
The University of Manchester
University Place, Room 2.218

This is the first in a joint seminar series co-organised by the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of Manchester and the Centre for History in Public Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine taking place in Manchester and London and sponsored by the Wellcome Trust.

The event will bring together policymakers, practitioners, historians and social scientists to discuss issues arising through and around cancer policy. Our aim is to create a historical framework for understanding cancer policy today, and to help historians and social scientists better understand how cancer policy has been made. The seminar will therefore frame questions that are central to all interests with a view to building a shared understanding of the present and historical context such as:

  • What does the ‘long view’ of cancer contribute to our understanding of cancer policy?
  • What continuities and changes can be identified in cancer policy over time?
  • What were the drivers of change? And who or what were the key actors?
